Oh My God, Am I a Statistic???

A.k.a. "The Lipstick Index"

According to Wikipedia:

The lipstick index is a economic indicator. Purchases of cosmetics - lipstick in particular - tend to be inversely correlated to economic health. During bad economic times, purchases of cosmetics rise.

Why cosmetics? With money being tight, people apparently find themselves indulging in smaller luxuries, rather than bigger ones. The Lipstick Index, in particular, refers to the "phenomenon" of women spending money on lipstick over, say, a spa trip to Hawaii. Borderline sexist? Maybe. True? Most likely (I know it is for me).

Anyway, here's a recent article from the Fashion & Beauty Section of the New York Times, complete with their picks of this season's most popular colors. Enjoy!

P.S. If you're vulnerable like I am, just make sure you don't buy too many, or else you might just as well have saved up for that spa trip (or, in my case, that on-board mic for my video camera).
