Budget-friendly Beauty: Jojoba Oil

In the last few years or so, I started developing an interest in natural skincare products. I could go on and on about this topic but, to make a long story short, I got on a "natural, chemical-free" products kick and decided that it would be better for my problem skin in the long run.

This led me to start researching various companies and cosmetics lines for products that were deemed "organic" and "natural" and could help my skin become more healthy. I started out with Dr. Hauschka, then moved onto Zia, and, with a smattering of various other products in between, my last major investment was with Lush. While I loved their skincare products, there was a slight problem with my continued use of them: they are expensive. Dr. Hauschka's products average around $40 each, and the small jars of moisturizers I purchased from Lush are both around $30 each. Yes, it may be worth it to spend a little more money for quality products, but it's no good if you don't have much money to begin with.

My last major "organic," "all-natural" purchase was Josie Maran's argan oil, which was literally a $50 (small) bottle of oil. No additives or "infusions"; just plain oil. Speaking as someone with oily skin, you'd think that using oil as a moisturizer would defeat the purpose of maintaining good skin. Seriously, though, it was probably more effective at balancing out my oily skin than a mattifier or something that was oil-free (don't want to really get into a long discussion, but basically the idea that trying to dry out your skin only makes it produce more oil). In the end, I felt like the bottle of argan oil was a worthy purchase, but probably something that I wouldn't get again.

So, what to do? Was it possible for me to get a decent, natural moisturizer without racking up the credit card debt? Yes, and that answer came in the form of jojoba oil.

I first came across the idea of using plain jojoba oil as a moisturizer on Daniel Kern's Acne.org website. According to many sources, including him, jojoba oil is the closest to your skin's natural oils than other vegetable oils (which are included in most, if not all moisturizers, "all-natural" or otherwise) and is non-comedogenic (i.e. it won't clog your pores). But the best part is that a 4 oz. bottle only costs around $10, and since I only use 3-5 drops at a time, this will probably last me at least a year.

I've been using jojoba oil for a few months now (after having used argan oil for about 6 months), and my skin continues to feel soft and healthy (well, as healthy as it can be, considering...). Also, since I'm using just the oil, there aren't any additives to irritate my skin, which can happen even with many natural skincare products.

If you're looking for a good, inexpensive moisturizer for your skincare routine, I highly recommend grabbing yourself a bottle of jojoba oil. Even if it doesn't agree with your face, its many other uses (body moisturizer, makeup remover, hair care, etc.) will still make it a good investment.

It's been quite a "hwile" since I posted anything on this blog. The usual (work, life, etc.) got in the way, and I just sort of put this on the back burner (waaaaaaay back).

I've come back with a post that is actually about a very inspiring story that I've been following for almost a year now. I don't know how many of you are familiar with Lauren Luke (a.k.a. YouTube beauty vlogger Panacea81). If you aren't, here's a little video that'll catch you up to speed:

Not too long ago, this amazing gal started coming out with her own cosmetics line (available online, at bylaurenluke.com). If I'm not mistaken, they only became available for purchase last Fall (November, I think). Well, it's been less than a year and, lo and behold, her fabulous wares will soon be available at the almighty Sephora!

I'll be honest, these kits are a smidge on the pricey side ($32.50 each), but from the reviews I've read, they are well worth the money. I'm not really keen on palettes (I feel limited by them), but I may take the plunge and grab that "My Smokey Classics" palette I've had my eye on.

Budget-friendly Beauty: DIY Body Scrub

Anyway, this time, rather than highlighting a product for purchase, I thought I'd share a little do-it-yourself project with you. I know; very "Martha Stewart" of me.

If you are like me, your bedroom/bathroom/storage closet is abundant with various body creams, butters, milks, and/or lotions. Birthdays, Christmas, random "Thank You" gifts - there's always at least a few people who decide to give you random skin care gift baskets. The problem is, it's always more than you could ever use in your lifetime.

So, what to do with all these bath and body goodies? Well, other than re-gifting them, you can actually put them to use!

You know all those body scrubs you find at the store? Yes, exfoliation is key to good-looking skin, but that stuff is not cheap! Now, you don't have to bother wasting your money on that stuff. You can make your own at home at little to no cost. All you need is that bottle or jar of whatever moisturizer you're trying to get rid of and some sugar (you can use salt if you want, but sugar doesn't sting or irritate your skin like salt can). Some people recommend raw sugar (the stuff that's in those brown packets at Starbucks), but plain white sugar is better for your skin since it's finer in grain (won't be as rough). And, last time I checked, a pound of white sugar only cost a couple of bucks.

In regards to the recipe: mix sugar and moisturizer, and apply like any other body scrub (massage onto skin and rinse). Most recipes recommend one part sugar to one part moisturizer, but since you're the one making it, feel free to use as much of either as you want. Also, I usually mix enough for one application at a time, so I don't know how long it'll keep if you mix the entire thing (although, I assume fairly long due to the amount of sugar needed).

And voilà! Good looking (and feeling!) skin, and you barely have to open your wallet! Happy mixing!

Budget-friendly Beauty: N.Y.C. Ultra Moist LipWear Lipstick

If you're like me, you barely look twice when you walk past those non-mainstream brand cosmetics in drugstores. Unfortunately, it's true that many of them are geared towards the younger crowd (an age group that many of us have outgrown lifetimes ago), but there are a few hidden gems there that deserve our attention.

I don't know about you, but drugstore lipsticks turn me off in a major way. Many of them are waxy and hard to apply. Even though they're extremely inexpensive, it's almost a waste of money to even try them out. The Ultra Moist LipWear Lipstick by New York Color (N.Y.C.), however, is in a league of its own.

These lipsticks offer a nice, sheer (but buildable) color. Yes, they are shimmery, but not in that "OMG the prom is 2nite!!!" kind of way, with the big, grade-school-arts-and-crafts glitter - it's a nice, subtle shimmer. And, true to their name, these lipsticks are one of the more moisturizing lipsticks I have ever tried. It's like putting butter on your lips - it pretty much blows other drugstore lipsticks out of the water! Seriously, the quality of this lipstick is great; this is on par with higher-end brands! And its fruity scent/taste is an exact match to that of Shu Uemura lipsticks (which, incidentally, cost $23 each, compared to that of these N.Y.C. lipsticks, which are 99¢ each).

I own two colors from this line: Café (301) and Violet Shine (319). Unlike the swatches on their website, Café is a sort of sheer bronzey brown, while Violet Shine is a nice, sheer raspberry. Both colors are extremely wearable for all occasions.

Unfortunately, since this isn't Maybelline or Revlon, it's kind of hard to find this brand at every drugstore, let alone find every color of this lipstick. I think I went to a Walgreens, an Ulta and two different Targets before I found a tube of Café.

In any case, next time you're looking for a new lipstick and happen to be in the vicinity of a N.Y.C. display, check out the Ultra Moist LipWear lipsticks. At 99¢ each, you can afford to give these a try.

The MAC Hello Kitty Collection has finally arrived!

Well, actually, it's been here since yesterday.

I've already picked up something from the collection: a lipstick in "Cute-ster." Very, very nice. In the tube, it's a light, pearly pink, but it's pretty sheer (Lustre finish), so it doesn't show up that bright on my lips.

As an Asian-American feminist, I'm well aware of the socio-political debate surrounding Hello Kitty (a gentle, cute Asian female with no mouth (although, it's important to note that Sanrio's backstory for Hello Kitty states that she's English...)). And I'm also aware of the existence of general Hello Kitty hate. What can I say? She's my guilty pleasure. Some people have drugs; I've got a mouthless cat and her arsenal of cute, little animal friends (actually, my favorite character is My Melody). Incidentally, I'm deathly allergic to cats.

Anyway, these suckers are going fast (the salesperson at the store, when I went to buy the lipstick, said to me, "You got the last one here! People are going to hate you!!!"), so if you plan to purchase, better act now.

Budget-friendly Beauty: Vaseline

That's right. Vaseline. Petroleum jelly, for you non-brand-loyal folks.

And no...

...Tyra isn't its only fan.

Vaseline has many uses, but the one I'll be talking about here is as a face moisturizer. Well, that's not technically correct. Vaseline, due to its inherent properties, can't be a moisturizer.

I know many of you scoff at the idea of putting Vaseline on your face. You may think that your face is too good for Vaseline, but you may want to think again. Next time you reach for your (expensive) face moisturizer or eye cream, try reading the ingredients. You may see that Vaseline (a.k.a. "petroleum jelly", a.k.a. "petrolatum") is listed as one of the main ingredients.

Because it feels so greasy, you may think Vaseline is an instant recipe for breakouts. You couldn't be farther from the truth. Why? Because Vaseline cannot be absorbed into your skin. Its ingredients just sit on top of your skin to create a layer (albeit a layer of grease). I guess the easiest way to explain it is that Vaseline is to skin as oil is to water; it just sits on top and never mixes.

So, if Vaseline never gets absorbed, how exactly does it help your skin? Well, by sitting on top of your skin, the layer of Vaseline creates a sort of barrier. What does this barrier do? It protects your skin from the elements (minus UV protection), but it also seals things (such as moisture) in. By preventing your skin from losing too much moisture, it helps keep your face nice and hydrated. Not only that, but you know all those expensive serums and other things you put on your face? A little bit of Vaseline will help seal those goodies in, too.

Now, the important part is how much Vaseline to use. Lucky for us, a little goes a long way. Just dab a little with your fingertips, rub between your hands, and pat onto your face. There will be a slight greasiness to your skin, but nothing unbearable. Usually, I'll do this as the final step in my nighttime skin care routine (after applying my moisturizer). You can also mix in a little bit of Vaseline with your moisturizer (à la Aquaphor), but I prefer to know for certain that my moisturizer will be doing its job (who knows where it'll end up sitting once it's all mixed up).

The results? Well, there's really no need to shell out extra $$$ for a heavier winter moisturizer. $5 (or less) at your local drugstore will help your face stay moisturized even in the coldest of weather. Also, as someone with frequent breakouts, I find that the Vaseline helps my pimples heal quicker (the barrier/seal it creates aids in the healing). It also keeps my skin soft, allowing for easier "extractions" (though I know that isn't really recommended, I just can't stop myself sometimes).

So, next time you're in need of a good moisturizer, don't hit the mall. Just collect all that loose change around the house and go to your local drugstore or supermarket and buy a jar of Vaseline. You won't be sorry.

Find the Right Foundation Shade

It may be because I'm a makeup newbie, but I feel like finding the correct foundation shade is becoming something akin to a spiritual journey. When you find that perfect match, it'll be as if you've just discovered the meaning of life.

One of my many searches led to a five-year-old post on a message board. The following is a recommended guide written by user "pbsadhaka" (one of the most in depth guides I've come across so far):

OK girls, here is a non-fail formula to find your true skin tone, and to match up what color of makeup and also hair color best compliments your skin tone. Save this, b/c it is always true, and failsafe!

Skin tones can be broken down into 4 categories: olive, red/pink, golden, & neutral. The easiest way to find your true skin tone is to hold a piece of white paper up to the skin where your neck meets your collarbone.

Olive skintones have an underlying tone of green, gray, or yellow. Olive people look best in either cool or neutral colors. Warm colors should usually be avoided unless it is of a darker value.

Makeup shades for cool/neutral skintones include: blueish reds (not orange/reds), plums, violets, silvery greens (evergreens), grays, and deep mauves. Haircolors that compliment olive skin are: blueish blacks, auburns, chestnut brown, dark golden brown. If you go lighter, you should never go lighter than a level 4 with a golden tonality.

Red/Pink skintones have an underlying hue of reddish brown, red, or blue-red. This skintone also looks best in cool or neutral colors. Warm colors are not recommended for this skin type. Complimentary hair colors for this type are any ashy or sandy blonde, burgundy browns, light cool blondes, avoid reds - it will make your skin look ruddy. If you want a red tone, go with a very light auburn or strawberry blonde.

Golden skintones have an underlying tone of golden-brown, gold, or peach. This skin tone looks best in warm colors. Makeup colors should include: grays, tan, browns, bronze, gold, grassy & mossy greens, warmer orange-reds, and corals. Complimentary hair colors should include ash and golden blondes, aubruns, neutral browns, and warm dark browns/blacks.

Neutral skintones have a balance of pink and gold undertones. You will have a hard time finding a dominant undertone in this type. Tis skin tone is usually described as ivory, beige, or brown skin. Neutral skintones can wear either cool or warm.

Taking your eye color into account can also help you decide your skintone:
Warm Eye Colors:
-Brown with red, orange, yellow or gold flecks.
-Blue with yellow or gold flecks.
-Green with reddish-brown, orange, yellow, or gold flecks.

Cool Eye Colors:
-Brown with black, gray-brown, gray-green, or gray flecks.
-Blue with white, blue, gray, or violet flecks.
-Green with blue or gray flecks.

When choosing makeup, there are other factors that you must take into consideration too. Women often choose a foundation that is too light for their skin. This gives you a pasty, pale "canvas" of a face. Then any makeup that you put on looks overly done - painted on. The other danger is going too dark with your foundation and ending up with an orange "mask". NEVER go more than 1 shade lighter or darker than your natural skintone. Also, don't rely on the names that the companies give to their foundations - look at the actual color of the product. What Revlon calls "golden", L'Oreal might call "beige". But whatever foundation you choose make sure that you BLEND and feather it from under your chin down onto the neck and behind the ears. But if you are choosing the correct level & tone, you should not see a line where your foundation stops anyway.

Eyeshadows can really compliment your eyes. Choosing a deeper/darker shade of a color will make the iris of your eyes appear lighter & brighter. A lighter eyeshadow will usually make your eye color deepen.

Sorry this post is so long, but there is a lot of info here. I use this guide all the time with clients, and there have been only maybe 2 or 3 times when someone did not fit this formula exactly!

If that doesn't get you closer to your "perfect" shade, then I don't know what will.

Budget-friendly Beauty: Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser

Although I love working for myself and being able to create my own schedule, I do find myself with a lot of down time every so often. A lot. And, unfortunately, this happens to be one of those times. So, to help me keep my hands from being idle, I've decided to start a new biweekly series here on my blog: Budget-friendly Beauty (yeah, no clever title here). In this series, I'll feature some of my favorite inexpensive products - a perfect complement to current times. Many of you may already be familiar with the products I'll be discussing, but for those of you who aren't, this is the place to familiarize yourself.

First up is the Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser for Normal to Oily Skin.

Cetaphil's Gentle Skin Cleanser is already a big favorite among many people (and multiple beauty award winner). Unfortunately, I find it a little too creamy and moisturizing for my oily skin (it's probably great for people with dry skin or those who live in extreme winter climates). Unlike the Gentle Skin Cleanser, the Daily Facial Cleanser is more like a face wash gel: it lathers up and rinses off clean. What I like about this particular cleanser, however, is that, while it's gentle and doesn't leave your skin tight and dry, it's still able to take off most, if not all of the grime on your face.

Now, many of you who are used to department store stuff probably shun the idea of using drugstore skin care products. And, for the most part, I would agree with you. Most of my forays into drugstore skin care has left me SORELY disappointed. And not just in a snobby sort of way. Most of that stuff has so much alcohol, fragrance, and other chemicals in it that it really does leave your skin for the worse. Cetaphil, however, is one of the few exceptions.

No, it doesn't contain all those fancy vitamins and minerals that promise to leave your skin looking fresh and radiant and a thousand years younger. ... But, guess what. All that stuff, when put in a face wash, is useless anyway. Why? Because you end up washing it all off before it has a chance to do anything for your skin. Your money is literally going down the drain. In the end, all you really need from a face wash is something that will leave your face clean and ready to go, and Cetaphil is something that will give you that at a decent price.

So, the next time you're looking to invest in a face wash, head over to your local Target, drugstore, etc., and give Cetaphil a try.

I know this list contains mostly brands that are a bit more on the expensive side. Drugstore brands usually don't have seasonal collections, so other than any new products, the "What's New" pages on their websites aren't that up to speed. Makeup Tip Week, Tip #5: Cleansing Oil

Ah, the end of my first series of makeup tips! I was worried when I first decided I would do this because I wasn't sure if I had enough tips that were worthy enough to publish on a blog. But here it is, the final post in the series! And what better way to end it than to talk about how to remove the stuff.

The cosmetics world is plentiful with makeup removers. Every cosmetics company produces at least a few. Cold cream, eye makeup removers, makeup wipes... The list goes on. However, the big question is whether or not they work... And sometimes they don't. ... Even after some heavy duty scrubbing.

If you've never heard of a cleansing oil, let me just take this chance to tell you how great they are. My current product of choice is Shu Uemura's High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil Fresh, better known as "the pink one".

Unfortunately, while cleansing oils are a staple of Asian cosmetics, they're pretty hard to find from companies here in the States (although, they are starting to pick up a little). And while there are other brands that offer a cleansing oil (like Lancôme, MAC, and Boscia), Shu Uemura's cleansing oils are the only ones that I know of that cater to different skin types.

Also, if you haven't noticed yet, cleansing oils are not cheap (they start at $20). Luckily, for those of us who are on the lookout for more economical options, Lumene offers a decent cleansing oil for around $10. However, like most of the other brands, it just offers the one formula.

When I first encountered cleansing oils at my local department store, I was hesitant to use them. I have oily, acne-prone skin, so I avoided anything with the word "oil" in it like the plague. I soon came to find that cleansing oils were different. They weren't something that I needed to shy away from. In fact, for someone who wears heavy duty makeup (when I do wear makeup), it was actually a godsend.

Let me tell you a little bit about how cleansing oils work. As we oily-skin gals already know, oil will melt and break down makeup. Because of this reason, most makeup removers are oil-based. Cleansing oils, however, go a step beyond normal makeup removers. Cleansing oils are formulated to react with water, which allows them to double as a facial cleanser. The oil emulsifies when water is added, like a detergent (depending on the formula, some oils may even foam or lather), which allows it to be rinsed clean off your face with no oily residue left behind.

That said, meet Ms. Makeup:

I applied MAC Studio Finish Concealer in NC30, Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner in Black, CoverGirl LashBlast Waterproof Mascara in Very Black, CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 4-kit Eyeshadows in Tropical Fusion (turquoise shade), Stila Convertible Color (on the "cheeks") in Petunia, Revlon ColorStay Lipliner in Red, and Shu Uemura Unlimited Lipstick in Red 190. Basically, I chose products that I thought were some of the most difficult to remove completely. To finish it off, I set everything with a little bit of powder, so that any remaining moisture from the makeup wouldn't assist in its own removal.

I decided to remove half of Ms. Makeup's face with some Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover (probably one of the better drugstore eye makeup removers).

As you can see, it did a pretty good job... But that's not to say that it didn't require some effort. It took me a good several scrubs to get every last bit off, especially the waterproof mascara. If it were my eyelids that I was doing this on instead of the back of my hand, I'm sure my skin would be nice and raw at this point. And, on top of that, I'd have to put it through another step of washing to get rid of the oily residue left behind (even though the makeup remover claims to be "oil-free").

For the remainder of Ms. Makeup's face, I applied some of my Shu Uemura cleansing oil.

For a full face, Shu Uemura recommends 3-4 squirts. However, I find about 2 squirts to be sufficient and more economical (FYI, though, you will need enough to be able to break down and rinse away the makeup thoroughly).

Remember, you have to apply cleansing oil to dry skin. Since the oil emulsifies with water, using it on a wet face will pretty much make it ineffective.

When you work the oil into your face, you don't need to scrub hard. Gently massage the oil into your face, concentrating especially on the hard-to-remove bits (like the waterproof mascara). Once you've worked the oil in sufficiently, add a little bit of water and continue to massage.

Once water is added, the oil will emulsify. As you can see, this particular formula just becomes a little creamy (as I mentioned before, some will actually lather up like a soap). Work it through again until you get all the oil, and then rinse.

And voilà! You're done.

The best thing about cleansing oils is that, unlike other makeup removers, you can get rid of your makeup and have a nice, clean face, all in one step. And, unlike other facial cleansers, cleansing oils don't leave your skin feeling tight and dry. As such, once you rinse off the oil, there is no need for any additional cleansing. You can just move onto the rest of your skin care routine. Congratulations! You just saved yourself some extra time (and your skin from being horribly irritated from all the wiping and extra washing).

And so concludes my first "Makeup Tip Week" series. It really was a challenge for me to be able to finish out the week, and I'm glad I decided to take it on. I don't know how useful these tips were for most of you reading this. I can only hope that at least one of the posts was able to help someone out there. And, really, that's all that I can ask for.

Makeup Tip Week, Tip #4: Blush and Face Contouring

I don't wear makeup every day, so I know I shouldn't criticize some of the choices made by those who do. If there is one thing that bothers me, however, it's that a few people will have on a full face of makeup... and no blush.

I can understand the desire to not wear blush. Unfortunately, with blush, there is a fine line between looking like this:

and looking like this:

But that shouldn't deter you from wearing blush. Why? Because the decision to not wear blush for the sake of looking "natural" can actually have the opposite effect:

Foundation is meant to even out your skin tone. Unfortunately, the only way it can do that is by layering color on top of your skin (like paint). While a more sheer formula will let through some of your skin's natural pigmentation, if your skin's condition requires heavier coverage, ain't nothin' coming through that! So, if you don't want to look like a lifeless mannequin, your only resort is to add back some color to your face.

Blush these days come in a variety of colors, from nude peach to hot pink. If I could recommend some products here, a good, "natural" color for gals with fair/light to medium toned skin is Jane Blushing Cheeks in Blushing Petal (the color is actually a light peachish pink, nothing like the swatch on their website). Darker gals should look into something a bit more pigmented and saturated in color, like NYX Powder Blush in Mocha or Pinky, or even Desert Rose (anything in the lighter pink or peach ranges would just be lost on you).

How to apply? Sparingly!!! Most blushes these days are highly pigmented, so a little goes a long way. If you feel like you need more color, then start slow and build the color rather than going all the way at your first go. Depending on the shape of your face, a touch on the apples of your cheeks (the area of your cheeks just under your eyes that, when you smile, pop out and look like little apples) is great for a natural look. Some people like to extend the color towards their ears. This is fine for a more polished look, but if you want something more natural, just touch up the apples a little.

For us gals with a little more "volume" to our faces, it's best to keep the blush on the rear half of the apples (on my face, that's just about under the outer corners of my eyes) and back. For us, coloring our cheeks in full gives us a more cherubic look, accentuating the "fullness" of our faces.

Swipe on a little too much blush? No problem! Rather than going through the pain of wiping it off and starting over, just go over your cheeks with a stroke or two (or three or ten) of face powder or powder foundation to lessen the color.

Some people take advantage of blush, but they decide to not contour. I can understand that - contouring is hard and a bit time consuming. Unfortunately, as with the reason for putting on blush, a little contouring and highlighting helps bring back some life and definition into an otherwise completely whitewashed face.

You can find many face contouring tutorials in makeup books and online. My favorite YouTube beauty vloggers, Panacea81, Xteeener, and Scandalous Beauty, all have videos breaking down and explaining all the different steps. All three ladies explain the concept far better than I ever could, so rather than me trying to explain anything here, I'd rather you watch their videos.

I do have to say a little something here. Don't get fooled by the cosmetics industry by thinking you can only contour with products specifically called "highlighter" or "bronzer". These products are labeled and packaged differently, but there is nothing special about them. They are made with pretty much the exact same formulas as a regular blush or eyeshadow. In fact, my favorite highlighters are actually eyeshadows (MAC Cream Colour Base in Pearl and CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 1-Kit Shadows in Snow Blossom and Pink Chiffon).

Makeup, like clothes, is merely a tool for your own creative expression. If I've learned anything about makeup in the short time I've decided to wear it, it's that you shouldn't feel as though you don't have the liberty to try something new each time you put it on. It's only makeup - nothing permanent. Have fun with it!

Makeup Tip Week, Tip #3: Eyeshadow Primer

No, I'm not going to be giving you a crash course on eyeshadow.

I'm going to be talking about primer for your eyeshadow, as in a base (like primer for paint).

Somewhere between the last time I was infatuated with makeup (a lifetime ago) and now, makeup artists have added several more steps in everyday makeup application with this "primer" business. There's a primer for your face, for your eyes, for your lips, and even for your lashes! The basic idea behind them all is the same: they're meant to make your makeup go on smoother and have it last longer. Now, I can't vouch for all of these different products (Eyelash primer? Really?), but there is one that I think is a definite MUST, especially for us oily-skin gals: eyeshadow primer.

I can't speak for everyone, but whenever I would wear eye makeup sans primer, within a couple of hours, the eyeshadow would get faded and creased (that thing that happens when your eyelids get a little greasy and your eye makeup gets all gunked up in the creases of your eyelids). The look? Not quite as bad as raccoon eyes... Somewhere in the realm of faded lipstick with unfaded lip liner; just plain unfortunate. If I was going to end up looking like that, I might as well have saved myself the trouble and not worn makeup at all. ... Which is probably why I stayed away from makeup for so long.

This is where eyeshadow primer comes in. A good eyeshadow primer will bring out the colors of your eyeshadow (although, this also depends on the quality of the eyeshadow itself), and grab onto the makeup and hold on for dear life. No creasing or fading - that eyeshadow is not going anywhere!

As you may or may not know, there is a plethora of eyeshadow primers in the market that promise various things. The most popular eyeshadow primer (deemed a "cult fave") is Urban Decay's Eyeshadow Primer Potion.

I have several samples of this that I've been using, and it really does deliver. The catch? $16 a pop. Not THAT expensive, but a little pricey if you're only used to spending $10 or less on your makeup. And, really, the prices just go up from there.

Like with many products in the world of makeup, you don't need to buy a proper "eyeshadow primer" to prime your eyelids. Many people also use cream eyeshadows, which seem to work just as well (Erin from Scandalous Beauty swears by MAC Paint Pots, and YouTube makeup artist Xteeener often uses Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadows).

Because of their nature and consistency, many cream shadows are made to last a good while on your eyelids without fading or creasing. Also, cream eyeshadows are offered by pretty much every cosmetics manufacturer, so you can easily find something that you can work with at your local drugstore (an extra bonus for those of us who are watching our budgets).

The great thing about cream shadows is that you don't need to color coordinate between the cream shadow base and the regular powder shadow on top. Of course, matching colors will help the colors pop a little better, but it's not necessary. A good beige or nude cream shadow base will work with any color. If you plan to wear a darker, more intense color of eyeshadow, a black or dark gray base will work nicely. Basically, because the cream shadow will be a little sticky on your eyelid, the powder shadow you apply on top will literally just stick onto the base. Although the color of the base may affect the overall color a little (lighter bases lighten the shadow a bit, while darker bases add a little more saturation), the color of the shadow on top will pretty much mask the color of the base underneath.

Another inexpensive option, believe it or not, is the Monistat Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel (not to be mistaken with their itch cream).

While many women swear by this as their makeup primer, I haven't gotten around to using it yet, so I won't really get into it here.

Do you ABSOLUTELY need eyeshadow primer? No. But, if you've ever dealt with your eye makeup fading and creasing, then I would highly recommend giving it a try.

Makeup Tip Week, Tip #2: Liquid Foundation Application with a Kabuki Brush

For those of you who don't know, this is a kabuki brush:

They sell them almost everywhere they sell cosmetics, and almost every cosmetics company makes one. They'll have different names (Urban Decay calls their's the "Big Buddha Brush", while Benefit's is the "Bluff Puff Powder Brush"), and range in price from $10 to $100. Other than the quality of the bristles, they all serve the same purpose.

The one that I currently use is the Sephora brand kabuki brush ($22). I initially bought it to use with my mineral foundation. When I decided I didn't really like mineral foundation, that's when I decided to put it to use with regular, liquid foundation.

For those of you who haven't jumped on the foundation brush bandwagon, many people actually recommend that you use a brush to apply foundation. Not only does it cut down on the germ factor, but it also allows you to use less product (the foundation won't absorb into the bristles like it will into your fingers or a blending sponge). I also like using a brush because it allows you to blend your foundation better (no streaks; just an even, airbrushed finish). On top of that, with a brush, you don't get your hands all gunky or fill up your trash can with a billion little sponges.

Prior to using a kabuki brush, my foundation brush of choice was the MAC 187:

I LOVED this brush for foundation application. The only problem was that it took FOREVER to blend. Seriously, it would take me about 20 minutes just to get my foundation to look right. I can't even imagine what I'd have to go through if I used a regular foundation brush:

As you can see, while the 187 is round and fluffy, this foundation brush is stiff and flat, like a paint brush. Not exactly ideal for blending foundation on your face.

Anyway, the reason why it took so long for me to apply foundation was that the brush could only blend a small area of the face at a time. This is where the big kabuki comes in. Actually, I saw Erin from Scandalous Beauty first do this in one of her YouTube tutorials and decided to try it myself. My foundation application went from 20 minutes, down to 3. I was sold.

How to apply? Pour a little bit of foundation (I do 1 1/2 squirts - about 1/4 tsp?) onto a palette, dish, or the back of your hand (my personal choice - your body heat will help the foundation spread a little easier). Rather than wiping the foundation onto the kabuki brush, lightly set the brush into the foundation and roll it around like a video game joystick. (You don't want to pick up all the foundation at once, so just dab a little at a time.) Now, go to town.

Many people recommend starting from the center of your face and working your way out. For people who have stuff they need to hide (like me), you can work out those areas first, if you'd like. You don't need to use a heavy hand when applying foundation. Just buff the brush over your face, kind of like when you wax the car or polish the silver (a little pressure, but not too hard). Some people use sweeping motions, but I like using circular motions (wax on, wax off). When you reach areas that are a little narrow (like the bridge of your nose), just squeeze the bristles of the brush together to form a more narrow shape. Dab on a little more foundation to the brush as needed, and remember to blend out your hair and jaw lines (there's nothing worse than when you can see the foundation demarcation lines on your face).

Depending on how fast you work, your foundation application should be done within 5 minutes, and your face should end up looking immaculate, like it really has just been airbrushed. I usually use the same kabuki brush to apply powder afterwards to set my foundation, but that only takes a few seconds. Clean up for the brush? I wash it out at the end of the day with a drop of regular shampoo (remember to rinse thoroughly!).

Anyway, give it a try! I have to say, though: it did take me a couple of tries of putting foundation on with a brush to get it right. But once I got it down and saw how great foundation could really make you look, I couldn't understand why I didn't do it sooner.

Makeup Tip Week, Tip #1: Smudge-proof Mascara

To ring in the new year (yay 2009!), I thought I'd do something new and have a week of makeup tips here on my blog. I know, I know. Pretty hilarious coming from someone who hardly ever wears makeup, right? I know. But that's not to say I don't have anything helpful to bring to the table when it comes to makeup advice. If anything, this will probably be very helpful to those who are just starting out with makeup.

First up is smudge-proofing your mascara.

This is something I know a lot of people have problems with, even those around me who have worn makeup much longer than I. Fortunately, this is also something that I found a way to deal with recently.

Even before I had renewed my interest in makeup, whenever I'd go out, one thing I'd do was put on a little mascara. I'd purchase products based on empty promises (stuff won't budge no matter what, or so it said), only to look in the mirror a few hours later and have a raccoon staring back at me. I wasn't crying, and I wasn't sweating or anything, but the damn mascara just wouldn't stay put. So, why? WHY?!?!

Not everyone has problems with mascara, but let me tell you who does. Oily-skin folks. And mascara can be waterproof, but it most likely will never be oil-proof (or else we'd never be able to get the stuff off). The bad part? Your face doesn't even need to be producing any major oil slicks for mascara to rub off. Just a little bit around the eyelids, and BAM! Hello, raccoon eyes!

So, now that we know this, how do we deal with it? Lucky for us, it's actually pretty simple: Powder. Any brand will do, but I would, however, look for something that is geared towards "shine control". My current product of choice is Urban Decay's De-Slick Mattifying Powder (available online and at your local Ulta and Sephora).

It's translucent, so it won't affect the colors of my makeup, and it does a pretty good job at keeping the oil at bay. Also, the compact is perfect to carry around for touch-ups throughout the day/night. But, like I said, any powder will do.

Now, how to apply? Easy. Apply powder generously under your eyes, focusing especially on the area just under your lower lashes (the blue-shaded area under the eye in the image below).

The end.

I usually go about it two different ways. I'll either grab a medium-sized brush (like a blush brush, or even a powder brush) and apply a good amount of powder under my eyes. Otherwise, I'll use an eyeshadow brush to apply the powder, so that I can concentrate specifically under the lower lash area. I usually do my eye makeup first, so that I don't mess up my foundation with any loose shadow, etc., but will save the mascara and the powder-under-the-eyes thing until the very end. Really, though, you can apply the powder before or after you apply your mascara (although, I'd do it before, as the powder will also help with fixing any mistakes, should you accidentally get some mascara on that area), but definitely do it AFTER you apply your face makeup (foundation, concealer, etc.).

Et voilà! Smudge-proof mascara. I can even wear the non-waterproof formulas now! Yay!

When I was younger, Saturday mornings were such fun for me. I would wake up at the crack of dawn, just to get in that extra hour of cartoons. Even though the shows that were on that early weren't that great, just the fact that they were cartoons was enough for me. ... Now, I'm lucky if I can even get up before noon. Sigh. (Not that the Saturday morning cartoons these days are what they used to be - am I right?)

From the reviews I've read, it's a fairly light shade of blue, and those of us with Art 101 under our belts will know that the blue, when mixed together with the yellow (in her hair) and the red (in her dress), creates a brownish color:

I, personally, don't find a problem with it. I have extremely sensitive skin, and I haven't noticed it giving me any weird reactions (unlike MAC, by the way, but that's an entirely different post). BUT there has been some major concern regarding products made in China within the last year, so I can understand people wanting to steer clear of it.

Wii Fit - Yes I Can!

Ohmygodohmygodohmygod! I was able to get one!!!

It was so magically miraculous how it all happened! Yesterday was totally my lucky day. Anyone who hung out with me that day, expect little miracles in your life because I'm sure it rubbed off.

So, I had to meet up with a director I worked with. He wanted to give me a copy of the rough cut of his film (the one I shot for him about a year back). We were supposed to meet at 11:30am at Starbucks, but due to various reasons, he didn't show up until 12:30pm. Mind you, I was just going to be in and out, so I literally rolled out of bed and hopped in the car to get there. My original plan was to grab the DVD, go back home, and crawl back in bed (What can I say? I keep odd hours.).

Anyway, so that plan was shot down when I had to wait an hour for dude to show up. Meanwhile, as I was waiting, a friend of mine called. When I told her I was in her neck of the woods, we decided to grab some lunch.

By the time I decided to hit the road and head back home, it was already 3:30pm, MUCH much later than I had planned. With the traffic and everything, I was finally back in town at around 4:30pm. Since I was already out, I decided I would stop by the mall before heading home to check out my Christmas gifting options. As I mentioned in my previous post, I spent a brief part of the night before halfheartedly looking for the Wii Fit. It didn't hurt to try, so I walked into the Target and headed up the escalator to the video games section.

Lo and behold, the shelves were empty. Sigh. Oh well, it wasn't like I didn't expect that. So, I decided to spend a minute to see what games were out for the Wii, but had no desire to buy anything. Just as I was about to leave the aisle, an employee walked by, carrying a box in his hand. At first, I wasn't sure if he was an employee, because he wasn't wearing the same kind of bright red shirt Target employees usually wear.

Anyway, so he walked past me, and placed the box he was carrying back on the shelf and walked away. I looked over... It was a Wii Fit!!! Oh my God! Was I seeing right? I walked over, and yes. Yes, he did just put a Wii Fit back on the shelf! I waited a second to see if he was going to come back (he didn't), then I grabbed the box and headed straight over to checkout. I was so elated, I didn't even bother to open the box and make sure it wasn't some messed up returned item (thankfully, it wasn't). I immediately made the purchase and headed straight home.

To think that if my day had gone the way I had planned it to go, with dude showing up on time and me getting home and just crawling back into bed, none of this would have happened. I know it's kind of childish to be so excited over a video game component, but the whole experience of it all was so magical! For something so elusive that people are going to great lengths to obtain, for something like that to just appear so effortlessly in front of me... Magical.

Oh yeah, on that same day, I also ran into a classmate that I hadn't seen in a few years while I was at Starbucks, and the owner of the gas station whose carwash damaged my car finally gave in (after about a month of letter writing and getting corporate and the BBB involved) and said he would pay for the repairs to my car in full.

But the Wii Fit thing was still completely magical.

After watching xteeener's tutorial for the blue smokey eye, I felt inspired, so off I went to my neighborhood Target. My main objective was to see if I could magically find a Wii Fit (yeah right), but the CoverGirl Eye Enhancers 4-kit Eyeshadow in "Tropical Fusion" (the same one xteeener used in her tutorial) was at a very close #2 on my list.

I won't lie. I had some doubts when I went to make my purchase. I've never really had very good luck with eyeshadows from the mainstream drugstore brands. In my experience, they've been pretty hard to work with and gave off little color. Seriously, it was like running your finger along cement, with about as much product coming off.

When I started rebuilding my makeup collection last summer (this was after a major purge of all of my old makeup, most of which I had around since high school... :-/ ), I tried to start with some of the cheaper stuff and tried a couple products from Maybelline and Rimmel. ... After I deemed them to be duds, I decided to hit up the quality, luxury brands. Better to spend more money on quality and be happy than to save a few pennies and complain about what you bought, right? Right then and there, I swore off major brand, drugstore cosmetics for good.

Anyway, so, here I am the other day watching this video, and I notice that the girl is getting some MAJOR color off of that CoverGirl eyeshadow pan. So, I buy it, and I go to test it out... W O W !!! I can't believe it! I remember trying CoverGirl in high school, but I have absolutely no memory of the eyeshadow being this soft and smooth! I swatched the blue on my hand, and the color payoff was great! It was totally true to the pan! I even did xteeener's blue smokey eye and put it through my cosmetics endurance test (me working out with makeup on), and I'm happy to report that the color was still there, even with all the sweating. I'm sure the eyeshadow primer I used helped a little as well, but still!

Did CoverGirl change its eyeshadow formula (they do refer to it as being "new"), or did I just get lucky? ... Whatever the case may be, it has piqued my interest and has given me new faith in inexpensive, drugstore cosmetics. I will definitely be giving CoverGirl a second chance.

Black Friday, Shmlack Friday

I only participated in Black Friday once in my life, and that was at a Walmart about 4 years ago. The doors were supposed to open at 6:00am, so my brother and I left our house at 5:30, thinking it was an appropriate time to leave.

WRONG. We arrived at the Walmart at around 5:45am, and there was already a line of shoppers with shopping carts winding around the parking lot. My brother got out of the car to save us a spot in line while I went to find parking. Amazingly, the line moved pretty fast as soon as the store opened. Unfortunately, people didn't slow down once they got inside. Everyone thought they were competing in Supermarket Sweep.

My brother and I, having left our house with intentions of getting a flat-screen TV, ended up leaving Walmart with nothing. We were positively traumatized by what we saw and what we had to endure during our 10 minutes there.

If you, like me, decided to sit out Black Friday this year (or, in my case, forever), don't fret. According to many financial experts, with the current economic maladies, "Black Friday" will actually be more like "Black Winter." Don't regret having missed any incredible deals last Friday because, according to them, we'll still be seeing more great deals to come before Christmas.

I've found yet another YouTube makeup tutorial channel. I have to tell you, though, I am actually pretty picky about which ones I subscribe to: some don't have enough variety in terms of the looks or tips that they offer, while others are just plain annoying to watch (pardon the snark). So, when I do post a YouTube channel here, rest assured that I'm trying to bring you what I consider to be the best (or, at least, the better) of these makeup tutorial channels.

That being said, this particular channel is run by YouTube user xteeena.

I really did come across her channel by accident. I was watching a video by another favorite YouTube makeup artist of mine when I saw a link to one of xteeena's videos (the one embedded above, actually).

What attracted me to that video was the gorgeous smokey eye... on an eyelid with no crease. Being of Asian ethnicity, I find that it's hard for me to copy or mimick some of the eye makeup tutorials I see (both on and off of YouTube) because my eyes don't exactly have the same features as the models'. So, seeing someone creating some of the most beautiful looks I have ever seen, and that she's creating them on an eye that resembles mine, is just amazing and very inspirational. And, to top it all off, she plays with the cheap makeup, yo! Believe me, with my current budget, I can't begin to tell you how great it is to see that little column on the right listing a bunch of drugstore brands, instead of it looking like the usual MAC shopping list!

My Choice for Best Lipsticks...

Since I don't wear makeup all too often, I always feel awkward whenever I recommend a certain product to someone. That being said, if I had to pick my favorite lipstick, my choice right now would be NARS lipsticks.

They come in 3 formulas: satin, semi-matte, and sheer. I can't speak for everyone, but I've noticed that most lipsticks dry the hell out of my lips after about 10 minutes of wear. With NARS, even the matte formula leaves your lips feeling nice and moist, like you just put on some lip balm.

My favorite, so far, is the sheer formula. The colors are highly pigmented (one swipe is usually enough) and buildable (meaning, depending on how much you put on, the colors can be light on your lips or deeply saturated). These lipsticks also leave your lips moisturized pretty much forever (or at least until you wipe it off) without leaving behind any of that greasy/slippery feeling some "moisturizing" lipsticks have. On top of that, there are no added scents or flavors, which I know is a big pet peeve for a lot of people.

NARS lipsticks are extremely popular among makeup fanatics. It has even won the 2008 Best of Sephora award (it was also last year's winner). I have to admit, the price tag is a little steep ($24 each), but this is one of those rare cases where you get what you pay for. NARS is available at Sephora and many higher-end department stores (like Nordstrom or Saks Fifth Avenue).

For those of us with tighter budgets, don't fret! I also have a choice for best drugstore lipstick because, in my opinion, Revlon's Super Lustrous Lipsticks come in at a VERY CLOSE second (we're talking photo finish here).

The quality of this lipstick is, I feel, better than most luxury/department store brands and is definitely on par with NARS. My only gripe is that there aren't a variety of textures. No matte, no sheer - it's only the one, full-finish color. But boy, does this lipstick leave your lips feeling SMOOOOOOOOOOOTH!!! No scents or flavors here either.

As you know, the one disadvantage of drugstore makeup is that you can't really try out the colors before you buy them. It's even harder with Revlon because they seal all of their products. As far as I know, Ulta is one of the only places where they have testers for drugstore brand makeup. If you don't have an Ulta near you, then here's a little trick. Look for a brand that doesn't seal their lipsticks, and test out their colors. When you find one that you like, look at the bottom of the lipstick, where you'll find a corresponding colored sticker (most makeup brands have this). Go over to the Revlon lipsticks and try to match up the colors of these stickers. More often than not, you'll get a pretty close match (make sure, though, that you pay attention to whether the lipstick is shimmery or not - Revlon will signify this with the words "creme" or "pearl"). If you mess up, just remember that you can return it (yes, you can get refunds on makeup from the drugstore!).

So, if you feel like you need a new lipstick, and are willing to indulge, then get yourself over to your nearest NARS counter. However, if you can't ever justify spending more than $10 on a lipstick, then definitely check out Revlon's Super Lustrous line (especially when stores have the buy-one-get-one-free deals). I assure you, you won't be disappointed either way.

Finding the Right Skin Care for Your Age

The other day, I was perusing the skin care aisle at Target and encountered two tween girls in serious deliberation. Girl A held up a motorized facial scrubber and insisted that it was the secret behind her great skin (mind you, these girls were at that age where they still have peach fuzz on their cheeks). Girl B was torn. She probably thought that the price was a little too steep for her allowance, but she ended up putting the mini face-sander into her basket anyway. Did either of these girls need this thing? Most likely not. But why did they buy it? Because they weren't aware that this product was not meant for them.

I think the same thing happens with people our age, in our 20s, 30s, and 40s. So many products exist in the world of skin care, all making (empty) promises of youth and beauty, and many of us (myself included) get sucked in. Unfortunately, many of us are also not yet ready to use some of these products either. For instance, did you know that people in their 20s (and some in their 30s) should stay away from anti-wrinkle and firming creams? Many women (and men) use these products as preventative treatments, but that's not how these things work. Most of these products "firm" the skin by tightening it and, subsequently, making it thin. Imagine what would happen to your skin if you started using these products prematurely. It would be like getting a face lift right now, albeit not that drastic. In the long run, though, you'd end up having to use more product and resort to stronger and even more drastic treatments later on down the line.

TotalBeauty.com, an online resource for - you guessed it - beauty and beauty products, has some tips for age-appropriate skin care. They break down what kinds of products you should use between ages 20 through 50, and they also include some product suggestions. According to them, people in their 20s, for instance, really only need to wash, moisturize, and treat specific skin conditions, like acne. They don't recommend daily exfoliation until your 30s, and no wrinkle treatments until you reach your 40s.

Total Beauty also has a skin analysis quiz, which is helpful in determining what kind of skin type you have, so that you can make more informed choices for your skin care regimen.

I found another makeup tutorial channel on YouTube. This one is by MichellePhan (a.k.a. "RiceBunny").

I find that while her videos aren't as intimate as those by some of the other YouTube makeup artists (she doesn't talk directly to her audience on camera; it's all voice-over), they are very polished (they're EXTREMELY well edited), and the tutorials are easy to follow. She also has good taste in music, making the entire video-watching experience quite pleasurable.

Tips for Online Makeup Shopping

Online shopping can always be a gamble due to the fact that you can't see the actual product you're planning to buy. Whenever you click on "Submit Order" when you're checking out, you're taking a big leap of faith, hoping that what you get in the mail a couple of weeks from now will be in good condition; will be exactly what you ordered; or will arrive at all.

Ordering makeup online is even scarier. Because everyone's computer monitors are calibrated differently, the colors you see on the websites could be spot on, or they could be light-years off. As such, the only benefit to ordering makeup online is for the convenience (not dealing with aggressive salespeople, or the possibility of making the trip only to find out what you want is sold out) and for the discounts. So, before you get yourself any more ahead in the checkout process online, I'd advise you to do the following:

1. Go to your nearest makeup counter to swatch/try out the products you want.
Unfortunately, some online retailers do not allow you to return opened/used makeup. Going to the store is the only way you can try the products out beforehand.

A.k.a. "The Lipstick Index"

According to Wikipedia:

The lipstick index is a economic indicator. Purchases of cosmetics - lipstick in particular - tend to be inversely correlated to economic health. During bad economic times, purchases of cosmetics rise.

Why cosmetics? With money being tight, people apparently find themselves indulging in smaller luxuries, rather than bigger ones. The Lipstick Index, in particular, refers to the "phenomenon" of women spending money on lipstick over, say, a spa trip to Hawaii. Borderline sexist? Maybe. True? Most likely (I know it is for me).

It's been a week since I returned from my trip to the East Coast. Is it just me, or do you sometimes feel like you just need to take a break after coming back from vacation? Right on!

I never understand why SOME people feel it's necessary for the government to take away the civil rights of certain groups of people, yet seem to go ape-shit (pardon my Français) when the government seems to even remotely encroach upon their own lives (e.g. gun restriction laws, raising taxes, lowering the speed limit on a certain part of the highway, etc.). There are some people I don't like either, but I would NEVER want the government to criminalize them based on my own personal opinion of them.

If you truly believe in God, and you believe God is the only One to deliver judgment, then you would do better than to have the government take away people's civil rights based on YOUR OWN judgment (because, yes, it is your own, as you reached your decision based on your own interpretation of the Word, or another's interpretation of it with which you agreed). But, most importantly, if you believe that God loves, then surely you can also believe that His love extends to all people, regardless of our differences.

I can only pray that this injustice towards our brothers and sisters will be overturned soon.

Thank GOD for YouTube! Without it, we wouldn't be able to watch all those great TV shows or movies from overseas, that episode of whatever we missed last night, or that episode of whatever we missed 10 years ago, and that video of that kid who wants everyone to leave Britney alone... Okay, so it does have its negative side, too.

Anyway, one of the things that YouTube has also brought to us is a plethora of tutorials for a variety of disciplines. One such discipline is cosmetics/make-up. YouTube has a bevy of make-up arists (aspiring and professional alike) creating tutorials for us gals (and guys) who want to know everything from glamorous make-up looks to special effects make-up looks.

I haven't had time to sit down and watch ALL of them, but I have found 2 YouTube make-up artists that I like and whose tutorial channels I have subscribed to and have become a fan of:

Scandalous Beauty (a.k.a. "Erin")

and Panacea81 (a.k.a. "Lauren")

I think the one thing that turns some women, including myself, off of cosmetics and make-up is that they don't know how to apply it (properly or at all) and, therefore, are intimidated. These two ladies are very personable and are GREAT at showing you how much fun you can have with all the colors make-up has to offer. Rather than using it as a way to subscribe to some sort of standard of femininity and/or beauty, make-up can really be used to create a bold statement of one's individuality. ... Sorry, get too philosophical there for you? ;-)

Anyway, so, yeah. Ladies and gentlemen, don't let make-up intimidate you. Go onto YouTube, grab a few tips from the thousands of skilled make-up artists online, and JUST. HAVE. FUN. !!!

10 Ways to Be Happier

How happy are you, really? If there’s room for improvement, then Gretchen Rubin has some suggestions.

A few years ago, on a morning like any other, I had a sudden realization: I was in danger of wasting my life. As I stared out the rain-spattered window of a New York City bus, I saw that the years were slipping by.

“What do I want from life?” I asked myself. “Well... I want to be happy.” I had many reasons to be happy: My husband was the tall, dark, handsome love of my life; we had two delightful girls, ages 1 and 7; I was a writer, living in my favorite city. I had friends; I had my health; I didn’t have to color my hair. But too often I sniped at my husband or the drugstore clerk. I felt dejected after even a minor professional setback. I lost my temper easily. Is that how a happy person would act?

I decided on the spot to begin a systematic study of happiness. (A little intense, I know. But that’s the kind of thing that appeals to me.) In the end, I spent a year test-driving the wisdom of the ages, current scientific studies, and tips from popular culture. If I followed all the advice, I wanted to know, would it work?

Well, the year is over, and I can say: It did. I made myself happier. And along the way I learned a lot about how to be happier. Here are those lessons.

1. Don’t start with profundities.
When I began my Happiness Project, I realized pretty quickly that, rather than jumping in with lengthy daily meditation or answering deep questions of self-identity, I should start with the basics, like going to sleep at a decent hour and not letting myself get too hungry. Science backs this up; these two factors have a big impact on happiness.

2. Do let the sun go down on anger.
I had always scrupulously aired every irritation as soon as possible, to make sure I vented all bad feelings before bedtime. Studies show, however, that the notion of anger catharsis is poppycock. Expressing anger related to minor, fleeting annoyances just amplifies bad feelings, while not expressing anger often allows it to dissipate.

3. Fake it til you feel it.
Feelings follow actions. If I’m feeling low, I deliberately act cheery, and I find myself actually feeling happier. If I’m feeling angry at someone, I do something thoughtful for her and my feelings toward her soften.

4. Realize that anything worth doing is worth doing badly.
Challenge and novelty are key elements of happiness. The brain is stimulated by surprise, and successfully dealing with an unexpected situation gives a powerful sense of satisfaction. People who do new things — learn a game, travel to unfamiliar places — are happier than people who stick to familiar activities that they already do well. I often remind myself to “Enjoy the fun of failure” and tackle some daunting goal.

5. Don’t treat the blues with a “treat.”
Often the things I choose as “treats” aren’t good for me. The pleasure lasts a minute, but then feelings of guilt and loss of control and other negative consequences deepen the lousiness of the day. While it’s easy to think, I’ll feel good after I have a few glasses of wine... a pint of ice cream... a cigarette... a new pair of jeans, it’s worth pausing to ask whether this will truly make things better.

6. Buy some happiness.
Our basic psychological needs include feeling loved, secure, and good at what we do and having a sense of control. Money doesn’t automatically fill these requirements, but it sure can help. I’ve learned to look for ways to spend money to stay in closer contact with my family and friends; to promote my health; to work more efficiently; to eliminate sources of irritation and marital conflict; to support important causes; and to have enlarging experiences. For example, when my sister got married, I splurged on a better digital camera. It was expensive, but it gave me a lot of happiness bang for the buck.

7. Don’t insist on the best.
There are two types of decision makers. Satisficers (yes, satisficers) make a decision once their criteria are met. When they find the hotel or the pasta sauce that has the qualities they want, they’re satisfied. Maximizers want to make the best possible decision. Even if they see a bicycle or a backpack that meets their requirements, they can’t make a decision until they’ve examined every option. Satisficers tend to be happier than maximizers. Maximizers expend more time and energy reaching decisions, and they’re often anxious about their choices. Sometimes good enough is good enough.

8. Exercise to boost energy.
I knew, intellectually, that this worked, but how often have I told myself, “I’m just too tired to go to the gym”? Exercise is one of the most dependable mood-boosters. Even a 10-minute walk can brighten my outlook.

9. Stop nagging.
I knew my nagging wasn’t working particularly well, but I figured that if I stopped, my husband would never do a thing around the house. Wrong. If anything, more work got done. Plus, I got a surprisingly big happiness boost from quitting nagging. I hadn’t realized how shrewish and angry I had felt as a result of speaking like that. I replaced nagging with the following persuasive tools: wordless hints (for example, leaving a new lightbulb on the counter); using just one word (saying “Milk!” instead of talking on and on); not insisting that something be done on my schedule; and, most effective of all, doing a task myself. Why did I get to set the assignments?

10. Take action.
Some people assume happiness is mostly a matter of inborn temperament: You’re born an Eeyore or a Tigger, and that’s that. Although it’s true that genetics play a big role, about 40 percent of your happiness level is within your control. Taking time to reflect, and conscious steps to make your life happier, really does work. So use these tips to start your own Happiness Project. I promise it won’t take you a whole year.

Roam around the world...

I used to really love that song. Still think it's a great song. ... Anyway, a quick update with my travels. Left New York the morning after Halloween (fun times!). Said "good-bye" to my friends Huy and Joe (who kindly let me crash at their place while I was there) and took a cab to Penn Station, where I caught a train down to Washington, D.C., en route to Chicago. Had a 4-hour layover there, which gave me a chance to catch up with my friends Chris and Erika (friends from film school who recently relocated to D.C.). Had lunch and a quick tour of our nation's capitol before I had to hop back on the train to Chicago, which is where I am now.

Riding the train is fun, but I don't think I would ever recommend going on a train ride that lasts longer than a day. The seats are roomy and comfy, but 20 hours of sitting down is no joke. However, seeing all the glory that is small town Americana is worth the trip (if you're into that sort of thing, which I am).

Anyway, arrived this morning at Chicago Union Station, where I was met by my brother. Dropped the luggage off, then hit the 'L' train down to Chinatown, where we gorged ourselves with some crazy fabulous dim sum (really, it was GREAT!). Whatever weight I lost last week walking all over New York and eating vegetarian all the time (both my employers and my friends are vegetarian), I think I gained it all back in that one sitting at Happy Chef. ... Oh well.

Hope everyone is doing well! Next stop on my trip: FLORIDA!!! X-D

Cheap Make-up

I know a lot of us, including myself, can't really afford to have our entire make-up collection consist of luxury, department store brands (even though we'd really love to). I also know that a lot of us, including myself, snicker at the thought of using the really inexpensive stuff at the drugstore. No more.

Next time you're at the drugstore, don't rush past the following brands: Jane, NYX, New York Color, e.l.f., and Wet N' Wild. There's a reason why these brands exist and why many of them have been around for so long (I remember browsing through Wet N' Wild in elementary school). Some particular items from these brands have even reached cult status among make-up fanatics.

Now, not all the products in these brands are good, let alone worthy of even acknowledging. Let me give you a quick rundown of which items to check out in each brand.

Jane - blush, eyeshadow (The colors are really pigmented, and last a good while. Try the Blushing Cheeks blush line; it's become one of my favorites.)
NYX - eyeshadow, blush, lip color (Its eyeshadows are really what it's known for.)
New York Color - loose powder
e.l.f. - makeup tools, lip color, blush, highlighter (Every item is $1! You can't lose!!!)
Wet N' Wild - blush, bronzer, eyeshadow, lip liner (Some people complain that the lip liner's a little too hard, but one particular color (#666, I think) has actually reached cult status.)

Believe it or not, some of the products from these brands actually rank higher among reviewers than those from the more mainstream drugstore brands, like Maybelline or Cover Girl. So, next time you're in the drugstore, be sure to check these out. They're all cheap enough that you won't feel bad if you decide to toss them (although, you should remember that make-up is refundable at most stores).

East Coast Tour 2008

For those of you who don't know, I'm currently on the East Coast and will be here until the second week of November. I'll be in New York for a week (work/play), swinging by D.C. on my way to Chicago to visit the brother (hopefully good news will find me there on Election Day), and then heading down to Florida to visit Miss Shana (playing it up "Golden Girls" style in Miami) before heading back to SoCal. Don't know if you're up with the weather in those places, but I have a big ass suitcase with me with both winter AND summer clothes. :-\

Anyway, talk of NY always reminds me of this:

Discounted Luxury Make-up

As you all may know, I recently took a renewed interest in cosmetics. I don't know why. Maybe it has something to do with me turning 30. I don't know. Anyway, here are some helpful resources that I discovered during my recent adventures in the world of make-up.

Cosmetics Company Store (Just a website with locations, not their official website)
This is Estee Lauder's outlet shop. All cosmetics brands that fall under Estee Lauder's umbrella is sold here at discount prices (Estee Lauder, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, MAC, Prescriptives, Origins, etc.). Sometimes it's slim pickins, but sometimes you can find a really great deal (I got a lipstick there for $10 - regular retail is $14). Most of the items here are overstocked items from the department stores, mostly recently discontinued, limited edition, or gift with purchase items.

Lancome Outlet Store
- Same deal.

Discount.makeup.com
- A lot of discontinued or older items. Haven't ordered anything from them, but saw a picture of a semi-wrong-looking lipgloss (some of their pictures are of items as they are) and was a little put off. ... But if they weren't doing good business, I figure they wouldn't be affiliated with a major online retailer. Shrug.

Attention All MAC Fanatics!!! (Holiday 2008 Collection)

MAC has just released its 2008 holiday collection. I can take or leave the makeup, but the thing that has sort of caught my eye are the holiday brush sets. If you're familiar with MAC brushes, you know that they are of GREAT quality... and will cost you an arm and a leg (and maybe the pinky toe from the foot you have left).

The brushes in these sets have shorter handles (they're meant for travel), but you really can't beat the price! $49.50 for a set of 4-5 brushes? PLEEZ! That's how much it costs to buy one regular brush!!!

Anyway, this is for those of you who've been wanting to indulge in some quality make-up brushes. And remember - free shipping on all purchases through this Saturday, the 25th!

P.S. For those of you who want to earn some cash back, remember to check the MAC cosmetics section of department stores affiliated with Ebates (e.g. Macy's, Nordstrom, etc.). Be careful, though. These department stores may not have free shipping deals, so the 3 or whatever % cash back may not be worth it if you have to pay for shipping.

Why the Sunday Paper is Great...

I have clipped more coupons in the last couple of months than I have in my entire life. I clipped them, organized them by expiration date, stuck them in an envelope, which I then put in my glove compartment (so I have them with me whenever I decide to take a little detour to Target or Walgreens).

I've found that there is an art to clipping coupons. A lot of times, there will be coupons for random things, like the new Swiffer SweeperVac (really?). Watch out for these coupons, because they'll have you spending money that you would otherwise have never spent.

The one thing that I do feel like coupons are good for are beauty products. Most of the coupons I've encountered for cosmetics and the like have been indiscriminate; you just have to read the smaller print. These coupons will have a picture of a particular product it's advertising and say something like, "Save $2 on Revlon ColorStay Foundation." But usually, right underneath it, in smaller print, it'll say, "Or any Revlon color cosmetic product." They're trying to get you to buy the ColorStay Foundation, but also give you the option of not.

Also available with the Sunday papers are the weekly drugstore circulars. These are also great because each week is a new deal. Don't just haphazardly go to Rite Aid to buy a fresh tube of mascara (which should be replaced every 3 months if you want to lower your risks of getting pink eye). Pay attention to these store ads because some store somewhere will have a "buy one get one free" deal. Get your mascara, and then grab that lipstick that you wanted to get but weren't quite sure if it was worth your money.

One thing I have to note, though, is that cosmetics are usually more expensive at drugstores than they are at places like Target or Walmart. If it's more cost effective for you to buy something with a coupon at Target than it is to get something on sale at CVS, then go to Target with your coupon. Hunting for deals is one thing, but saving money is another.

Deals & Steals Online!!!

With the economy down, we're starting to watch our spending. Although the best thing to do is to not buy anything at all, we all know that's impossible. We all have some material needs (and wants) in life that we cannot ignore.

Online shopping has become increasingly popular because of goods being priced lower than those offered at your local brick & mortar. On top of that, more online retailers are offering deals for free shipping, and sometimes you can even get away without paying sales tax. It's also a wonderful thing for semi-asocial people such as myself. No hassle of having to deal with aggressive salespeople, and no waiting in long lines to check out. Pure heaven. Now, let me tell you about a few online resources that can make your online shopping experience much more grand.

First off, there is my current favorite: Ebates.com. Join Ebates (for free), and you'll have access to getting cash back from hundreds of online retailers. How does it work? Log into your Ebates account, click on the link to the online retailer of your choice, and start shopping! Clicking on the link activates a sort of link between your purchase and your Ebates account. The money will be deposited to your Ebates account and will be sent to you directly or deposited into a PayPal account.

There are two minor snags: 1. You have to have earned a minimum of $5 in cash back before you can see any of that money; and 2. Checks are sent to you on a quarterly basis (once every 3 months). BUT I can assure you that this service works! I joined earlier this year, and have already received checks from them. Also, in my experience, dealing with customer service when a particular purchase hasn't posted to your account has been fairly easy. Of course, the burden of proof is on you, but it's as easy as sending them a copy of your invoice and evidence that you activated an Ebates ticket for that retailer at the time of purchase (which you can easily find in your Ebates account). They also have a "Daily Double" deal, where they'll choose one retailer and double the cash back percentage for the day (I'm still kicking myself for the day I missed Shu Uemura at 10% off, plus additional coupons!!!). If you're just signing up for Ebates, be sure to tell them I referred you (enter my email at hotmail.com)! ;-)

Second, there are those AAA discounts. Of course, you have to be a AAA member in order to take advantage of this, but deals like 10% off of any Target online purchase??? Save yourself the gas money, and order those funky linens online!!! AAA deals work a little like Ebates: you have to log into your account and activate the link in order for the discount to work, but it's taken off right when you check out (no waiting for any checks).

Next, there is Retailmenot.com. This one is pretty straightforward. Type in the web address for a particular online retailer, and the search engine will bring up a list of available coupons, along with a rating of whether or not it's working and comments from other users. No membership involved.

Then, we have sites like Shopping.com and BizRate.com. Enter the name of the item you want to buy in the search engine, and these sites will bring up a list of all the online retailers selling that particular item. The best part? They also indicate who's selling it the cheapest. Make sure you check out their seller's ratings, though.

Finally, register online to become a member of whatever clothing, electronics, makeup brand or retailer you have any interest in, and sign up for their email newsletters. Most of the time, they'll send you a bunch of junk advertising the latest whatever (it might be helpful to create another email address dedicated to this stuff). BUT, every once in a while, they will send you that ONE EMAIL... The one that has the line, really small in the corner, that says "25/50/75% off all purchases!" JACKPOT!
